Continuing in its mission to partner with local nonprofits in the city of Philadelphia, Lodge No. 2 will be serving meals at the Gift of Life Howie’s House, which serves as a “home away from home” for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging, meals and supportive services to those who travel to Philadelphia for transplant-related care. Every evening, the staff at the House host volunteers from the community to prepare meals for patients currently staying on premise, in a manner reminiscent of the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.
Volunteers are expected to arrive at 4:00 p.m.; dinner is to be ready by 6:00 p.m. and will be served until 7:15 p.m. in a buffet style format. Kitchen clean-up is expected to be completed by 8:00 p.m. The Gift of Life Howie’s House will provide virtually all beverages and kitchen amenities (stove, refrigerator, pots, pans, colanders, etc.) except for the food to be cooked and aluminum pans with which to serve the food during dinner. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
The staff ask that we prepare a salad, one or more protein entrees, one vegetarian entree, one or more starchy dishes (potatoes, pasta, etc.), several vegetarian sides and a dessert. They were especially particular about ensuring that the vegetarian dishes were completely devoid of any animal by-products such as chicken/beef broth (in the cases of soups) and so forth. After the food is prepared and served, volunteers are encouraged to meet and dine with the families that evening.
If you would like to volunteer for the event, kindly RSVP to William C. Soloway by Sun., 08-Dec-2024, via the button below:
