Grace Under Pressure, Heritage, and the Road Ahead

Brethren,

True character isn't forged when everything goes strictly according to plan; it’s revealed in how we respond when the unexpected happens.

We are taught in Freemasonry about standing upright in society and demonstrating our fitness to be made a Mason. That philosophy sounds great in theory, but its real-world test comes in moments of pressure—like standing in line at a formal District visitation, extending a warm hand of fellowship, and silently performing emergency footwear surgery with a bit of tarred bank-line while your sole falls apart. 

Remaining calm, maintaining poise, and turning potential embarrassment into good-humored composure is the essence of keeping character flowing. (And having the hosting Worshipful Master gift, an extended shoehorn at the end of the night is just the universe’s way of keeping us humble and laughing!) That same adaptable, grounded spirit is what carries us forward into every new hall and journey.

This August, that road leads down to Tennessee. I’ll be joining fellow brethren from Lodge No. 2, as well as visiting a local lodge run predominantly by Filipino brothers who are rolling out the red carpet for a full fiesta-style reception, complete with a pig roast and incredible fellowship. It’s a wonderful reminder of how vast and welcoming our brotherhood truly is.

Looking ahead to September, the journey continues as I travel around to several lodges to conclude our celebrations for America 250, highlighting Lodge No. 2's profound historical influence across our jurisdiction.

From binding a shoe together on the fly to sharing a pig roast in Tennessee, and honoring two and a half centuries of our nation’s history, it all ties back to the same timeless truth: a firm handshake, a steady heart, and a character built to handle whatever comes our way.
